Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer signs new four-year deal

Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer has signed a new four year deal which will keep him at Brendan Rodgers' side until the summer of 2022, after establishing him as a first team regular under Brendan Rodgers.

The 20-year-old has played 33 times for Celtic this season, helping Celtic to their seventh Premiership title in a row.

Speaking to the official club website, Ajer said: “I wanted to be here at a Celtic and thankfully the manager and the club wanted me. I’m really happy to sign a new four-year deal. It was never in doubt in my mind when the opportunity came up. I couldn't be happier to be here and I’m excited to be here for many years to come.

“I’m really happy to be part of one of the biggest clubs in the world. It means a lot to me. Knowing that I’ll have a future at this club feels great because I’ve developed so much here thanks to the manager, staff and players and I want to continue developing in the way I have.

“You want to achieve as much as you can as a footballer and we have a big opportunity to do that against Motherwell in the cup final. We can make history there and that’s what we’ll be looking to do. We are obviously focused on the game and what we need to do but we all know that we have the opportunity to be part of this great club’s history.

“My goals right now are to get as many games as possible for Celtic. It’s a big dream to come through and play week-in-week-out here. I’m hoping to do that more and develop a lot as well with the help of the players and the gaffer.”

With the Scottish Cup Final game against Motherwell next weekend as Celtic look to win a historic double treble, Ajer added: “We’re motivated for every game we play. We know that Motherwell will make it a really tough game for us at Hampden so we need to be ready for a tough opponent. We respect them a lot. They’ve had a really good season making it to the final in both cups.

“That shows their quality but we already know that they’ll give us a tough game. We know we’ll have to be at 100 per cent if we want to win. “

The defender was signed as a 17-year-old by former Celtic manager Ronny Deila from IK Start in July 2016. He was farmed out on loan to Rugby Park in January 2017, before returning to Celtic in the summer, usurping Jozo Simunovic in the heart of the defence and keeping Marvin Compper out of the team altogether.
