Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for five games after he was sent off during Real Madrid's 3-1 win over Barcelona in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday. Ronaldo was given a one match ban for being shown two yellow cards and a further four for pushing the referee in the back after he had been shown the red card.

He was first booked for taking off his shirt to celebrate his goal to make it 2-1 and was shown his second yellow for diving.

The 32-year-old Portuguese international has ten days to appeal the ban, but if upheld then he faces being out of domestic action until the 20th September when Madrid play Real Betis.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, after the game, said: "Ronaldo's sending-off annoys me because even if it is not a penalty, the card is harsh. We will see if we can do something so that he is available on Wednesday."
