Hearts head coach Ian Cathro sacked four days before new season

Scottish Premiership side Hearts have announced the departure of head coach Ian Cathro just four days before the new season kicks off. Cathro had faced mounting pressure and calls for his resignation following some dire results in this season’s League Cup campaign, with the club’s 2-2 draw with Dunfermline on Saturday the final straw for the club’s board and supporters.

In a statement published on the official club website, Director of Football Craig Levein said: “The Board wishes it to be known that this was a very difficult decision, reluctantly made, as every member of the Board recognises that Ian is an extremely talented young coach with a very bright future ahead of him.

"We thank Ian for all of his efforts and wish him well in the future.”

The players were informed of Cathro’s departure at 9.30am on Tuesday morning and it is expected that Jon Daly, Austin MacPhee and Liam Fox will take charge of the club’s first game of the season on Saturday against champions Celtic.

Cathro was appointed Hearts manager in December 2016, replacing Robbie Neilson.
