McLeish names seven debutants for Peru and Mexico friendlies

National team manager Alex McLeish has called up seven debutants for Scotland’s summer friendly games against Peru and Mexico.

Hibernian’s Lewis Stevenson, Hearts’ John Souttar and St.Mirren’s Lewis Morgan [on loan from Celtic] have been handed call-ups after impressing for their clubs

Scott McTominay returns to the squad after missing out on the 1-0 win over Hungary and will travel to Peru after the FA Cup Final this weekend. While Johnny Russell has returned to the squad after starring for Sporting Kansas City in the MLS with Hibernian’s Dylan McGeouch and Wolves defender Barry Douglas also coming into the squad.

Speaking after making his squad announcement, Alex McLeish said: “I’m really excited to work with the players included. They have all been guys who have been in really good form for their clubs. I’ve known Lewis (Stevenson) since he was a kid and he’s been very consistent. I’ve rarely seen a full-back play at such a level throughout a season. So many legends of the game have also echoed my sentiments.

“John (Souttar) is a good young prospect and been playing under Peter Grant at the under-21s, progressing very well. He’s still got a lot to learn but he’s had a great season under Christophe Berra who would have kept him right. I love to see young players getting a chance and Lewis Morgan is certainly someone who has emerged.

“I’ve had a lot of feedback from people who have worked with him and he’s really dynamic. We need to start encouraging that level of talent.”

There are no call-ups for Celtic’s Kieran Tierney, Leigh Griffiths, Callum McGregor or James Forrest after the Parkhead club intimated their desire for their regular first team players to miss out on the games ahead of the club playing in the Champions League qualifiers.

Peru and Mexico are using the matches as preparation for the World Cup in Russia this summer.
