Matt Phillips secure Scotland win over Hungary

Matt Phillips

West Brom midfielder Matt Phillips scored his first goal for Scotland as Alex McLeish’s side secured a 1-0 win over Hungary.

James Forrest missed two chances in the first half, while captain Charlie Mulgrew had a penalty saved after Ryan Fraser was fouled in the box.

But minutes into the second half Phillips tapped home a deflected Fraser cross.

At the other end, keeper Allan McGregor was called into action twice to deny Roland Varga and then Adam Szalai after Mulgrew was caught in possession.

The first victory for Scotland in McLeish’s second stint as national manager followed a 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica at Hampden Park on Friday.
